You know, sometimes you just have to laugh.
I always make a point of announcing the nominees and winners of PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian of the Year awards. Having celebrities give a voice to the vegetarian lifestyle is a great way to reach more people who might not otherwise look into vegetarian eating. I’ll admit, too, that it doesn’t hurt if those celebrities also happen to be sexy. But as reported today on HuffingtonPOst.com, one of this year’s winners, “Parenthood” star Dax Sheoherd, had to turn down the award this past week. Why? Because he isn’t actually a vegetarian. He doesn’t even play one on TV.
How did this happen?
Well, apparently PETA was pretty excited about giving the Sexiest Vegetarian of 2013 award to their first ever celebrity couple. And Dax’s fiancee, actress Kristen Bell, is a vegetarian. But Dax announced this week that he had to respectfully decline the award because he eats chicken.
I had to laugh at the response from the Huffington Post:
Wisely, PETA wasn’t all, ‘What the cluck?!’ and took the revelation in stride, proud to at least have the bride-to-be as their reigning queen.”
PETA did in fact respond in a very cool and collected (and very respectful) manner.
Instead of getting offended by what could have been a bad publicity event, they were very gracious and understanding in their public statement.
We’re delighted to recognize Kristen Bell as our Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity,” they said Thursday. “She sets a wonderful example of kindness to animals and healthy living to her countless fans, including Dax! We love Dax, and we’re glad to read that he’s aspiring to be more like Kristen. We are here to help with recipes and our vegetarian starter kit, and we’ll be sending the couple a delicious gift basket of Beyond Meat and Gardein veggie chicken products.”
I think PETA and Dax Shepherd, handled the whole thing very well. He was honest and respected for that honesty and PETA, instead of looking embarrassed, looks like the intelligent and accepting entity that we want speaking for the vegetarian community.
Of course, it’s still funny.
